| Customer Reviews: not good for flat footed runners. September 9, 2010 Alan Math (Provo, UT) This is not a shoe for runners with very flat feet. Several years ago I ran through multiple pairs of an earlier incarnation of this shoe (the NB 855 and 856) and liked them very much. The new NB 850 has a feature called the Stabilcore that is basically a stiff plastic ridge that runs along the arch. Since I have a very flat foot, that ridge presses into my arch making the shoe uncomfortable. Many shoes on the market right now have a similar ridge. These include the Brooks Beast, Saucony Guide 3, and NB 1012. Although they all claim to be for runners with flat feet wanting motion control, the design prevents truly flat footed runners from wearing these shoes.
This shoe will probably be very good for runners with medium or low (but NOT flat) arches wanting cushioned motion control.
I also own a pair of Saucony Guide 3. If you like the NB 850 you might also like the Saucony Guide 3. The Guide 3 also has a ridge that hits my arches. To me both of these shoes feel quite similar. Though the NB 850 feels spongier than the Saucony Guide 3.
Like a glove June 12, 2009 Mr. Smarty (Bennington, VT) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have always been partial to NB running shoes. Everyones foot is different, though, and for that reason everyone has different brand preferences. For instance I can't fit into Asics at all, though most people find them to be very high quality. That being said, I think these are the finest pair of running shoes I have owned. I have never quite had a pair of sneakers fit this well. I love the lateral support. The vertical components of the "N" on the sides are actually straps that tighten with the top laces adding nice side support and adjustability to fit around the midfoot. I usually get a 2E but with these I found the D to be perfect for that reason. The material quality seems top notch. I tried on a few of the lower number models before getting to the 850's and found the fit and materials sadly lacking. I am so impressed with these that I am considering buying another pair to have on hand. Strongly recommend to NB fans who have found them to be a good fit in the past.
